Handles Gastropub Pleasanton - Got a handle on it?

Handles Gastropub Pleasanton -  There have been a number of restaurants that have come and gone from the Pleasanton Hotel...Handles seems seems to be one that may stick around.  Given the name, you wouldn't expect to see too many healthy options, however at Handles you do have healthy options.

Here's what their website says...

We strive to source as much of our all natural meats, fish and produce locally. We also believe in craftsmanship, which is why we make nearly everything in house (smoked meats, sauces and dressings, even our ketchup is house made).

Healthy Options Abound

Their menu can work for even the most health conscious person.  Lets take a look!  Then the next time you go to Handles you won't have to throw your fat loss efforts out the window!

Starters - I highlighted the best options (see below)...for the others here's what you can do to make them healthier...ask for no bread or eat only half of it, ask for all sauces/toppings on the side and apply sparingly...sorry no french fries though (they do have sweet potato fries...better, but still avoid)
  • Charcuterie Board - this one is the the bread...not as it goes into your mouth
  • Jamaican Spiced Smoked Salmon - cucumber cream sauce on the side and avoid/half the pita
  • Ceviche Lettuce Tacos - mango pico de gallo on the side (this should be fine however)
  • Seasonal Hummus - just avoid the flatbread (beware of the bread with many selections)
Great - Just Halve/Hold the Bread

Soup & Salads - great options here...avoid the soups (liquid calories and you never know all the options below...the wedge salads have less nutritious lettuce (e.g. iceberg)

  • Grilled Salmon Panzenalla - request no bread and the vinaigrette on the side
  • Market Salad - add chicken or other meat (salmon/prawns) and request no croutons
  • Spinach - add chicken or other meat (salmon/prawns) - candied walnuts and vinaigrette on the side
Side the Dressing - Hold the Croutons

Burgers & Things - below are my selections, however the grass fed beef looks great sans the bread...toppings on the side...ask if you can sub a house salad for the slaw/fries...although the slaw is probably the better option

  • Lamb Burger - get the sauces on the side and avoid or eat only half the bun
  • House Smoked Turkey Carver - half the sourdough and toppings on the side
  • Rosemary Chicken Sandwich - half the focaccia and toppings on the side
Hold the fries - Halve the Bread
Main Course - fish and chips and pot pie are out (you can smell the carb overload on these), the Portabello Stack, Pork Chop or Meat Loaf are options just watch the sauce and garlic mash (eat half of these).  You probably have two meals here just get half to go before they even bring your plate.
  • Grilled Wild King Salmon - looks great...remember you can take some home for later
  • Grilled All Natural Ribeye - red wine butter (on the side), cut the garlic mash in half
  • Smoked All Natural Chicken Breast - balsamic glaze (on the side)
Pork Chop and Veggies

Sides - a couple great options below...avoid the bread, mac & cheese and Caesar...garlic mashers are a maybe if you just did a killer workout (elliptical cruising doesn't count)...half a portion is adequate

  • Market Vegetables - you can't go wrong with these...Vegetables you can't get enough
  • Small House - add it to an entree that is short on veggies...dressing on the side
Love Handles (great play on words here lol) - unfortunately for you...if you want to eliminate your love handles these are a definite no go!
