The Truth About Running & Stress

Whenever you go outside, you see people running around for exercise. It’s a great way to get the adrenaline rushing and you can certainly stay in shape when you’re running on a routine basis. The downside, however, is that it can cause a significant amount of stress on the bones and joints of your body.

Doctors have said that one of the most traumatic things you can do to your body is run. This is because of the sheer force that runs through your body every time your foot makes contact with the concrete. As long as you’re wearing comfortable shoes, doing your stretches and practicing proper breathing techniques throughout the run, you can usually avoid many injuries.

However, as you get older, you are more susceptible to injuries. As you exercise, whether it’s a run, bike ride or anything else, your joints aren’t what they used to be. It’s possible that you will sustain injuries in your ankle or knee joints simply because your body is no longer equipped with the same flexibility as it once was.

If you suffer from any kind of illness, it can start to take a toll on your body. Osteoporosis will affect your bone density if you continue running after a diagnosis such as this, you will likely sustain serious injuries. This could include such things as a broken ankle, shin splints or something even more serious.

Most likely, you exercise to stay in fit and relieve stress. This is great. You don’t want to stop being physically active just because you’ve got an illness or because you’re getting older. But it does mean that you should consider altering your exercise to relieve some of the stress in your joints. This means switching to a bike or an elliptical machine where you are removing so much of the trauma that goes through your body.

Stress fractures are common for runners. What may be a sore muscle or stiffness can actually be coming from the bone below the muscle that is causing you problems. If you let it go undiagnosed, it’s going to become a complete fracture. With more exercise of the muscles in the lower leg and feet, you can help to reduce the chance for fractures.

The next time you’re thinking about going outside for a run, think about what you could be doing to your body. There are tons of different ways to get your exercise without damaging your body in the process. After all, you work out to be healthy – if you’re doing more damage than good, it’s not producing the result you want. A jog, a bike ride or a few miles on an elliptical will relieve your mental stress and prevent joint stress, too.
